WINDOW INTO THE PAST #3: REEL SAN PEDRO

Location: Grand Vision Foundation, 434 W. 6th Street, San Pedro, CA

THERE HAVE BEEN 16 THEATERS IN SAN PEDRO SINCE THE FIRST ONE IN 1906:

1906: SAN PEDRO OPERA HOUSE,  211 6th Street
Theatrical productions, local & professional; no known operas

1907 – 1922: STAR THEATRE,  Corner of 5th Street & Beacon Street
Also called Star Auditorium
San Pedro’s first moving picture house Owner: Mrs. Anderson

1907: ELECTRIC THEATRE, 205 6th Street
Stage attractions & moving pictures
Later became: Olympic Theater & Union Theater

1908 – LYRIC THEATRE, Beacon Street between 5th & 6th
Vaudeville & moving pictures

1910: Fisher’s Theatre, corner Beacon & 4th Street
Moving pictures
In 1911, became the Idle Hour Theatre

1912 – 1915: ALHAMBRA THEATER,  515 S Beacon
Style: Mission Revival Theater

1912: GLOBE THEATRE, 204 W 6th Street
Opened May 5, 1912 – Demolished in 1971
First Vaudeville Theatre in town, built for $55,000, 622 seats
Started with stage productions; Second floor used for community events
Showed “sleazy films” as: Pussy Cat Theater & Baby Doll Theater

1914 – 1923: MAJESTIC THEATRE, 407 S Beacon Street

1917 – 1928: EMPIRE THEATRE, 124 W. 5th Street
Stage productions, then moving pictures

1919: VICTORIA THEATRE, 115 W 6th Street
First-run moving pictures & vaudeville; featured probably the first theater organ
Later became Del Rio Club, then a boxing arena

1920 – 1976: STRAND THEATRE, 1135 S. Pacific
Began as: California Pacific Theatre
Later: Mark Strand, Fox Strand and Pacific Strand
Les Brown and his Band of Renowned played live concerts there.
1971 admission prices: Adults $1.00/ Kids 50 cents

1923 – 1956: CABRILLO THEATRE, 115 W 7th Street
Also called:  Fox Cabrillo Theatre
Seated 1518; Organ rose out of floor
Vaudeville, orchestra & first run moving pictures
Early admission prices: Adults 25 cents matinee; 50cents evening; 75 cents balcony; Kids: 10 cents  

1924 – 1952: BARTON THEATRE, 211 N Pacific Avenue Also known as: Barton Hill Theatre; usually ran second-run moving pictures  

1924: ROYAL PLAYHOUSE,  1016 W 7th Street

1925: BARTON THEATRE,  211 N Pacific Avenue

1931: WARNER GRAND THEATER,  478 W 6th Street
Opening Night MC was Frank Fay who introduce Jack Warner, Jr.
50 foot screen; Maids in Ladies Room; Porters in Men’s Room; Trained Ushers
Stars who came to Warner: LauraLa Plante/ Barbara Stanwyck; Laurence Grey; Joan Blondell
Was Juarez Theater briefly
Designated a Historic Cultural Monument

1949: SAN PEDRO DRIVE IN, 1811 N Gaffey
Car capacity of 831; Architects were William Balch & Louis Bryan
Distinctive cowboy waving to approaching ships was the trademark
Theater name blocked out in neon-lighted letters
Operated by Pacific Theatres chain
