Joe Strapac’s grandparents were immigrants from the Yugoslav island of Komiza. Joe was born in 1942 in San Pedro. He graduated from Compton High in 1960 and earned a teaching credential from Long Beach State. He taught five years at Compton High School and then was a systems analyst in the financial services industry. Joe established a proprietorship,
Shade Tree Books, in 1977, aimed at model railroaders. Over the next fifty years, he has had 60+ titles published and over 110,000 copies sold. He retired in 2008 and is now a contract “content person” for non-profit historical societies.
